for your container gardens
WITH A LITTLE CARE AND ATTENTION, YOUR CONTAINERS WILL LOOK GREAT ALL SEASON LONG
WATERING/FEEDING
Outdoor planters:
-
Water the soil (not the leaves) in the morning when leaves have time to dry out, decreasing susceptibility to disease.
-
Feed 1x/week at half strength in Spring, Summer, & Fall. Click here for a great all-purpose fertilizer AND bloom booster.
-
DO NOT water on a schedule - Always check soil first, before watering. When top 1-2 inches are dry, water thoroughly until it runs out of the bottom. Wet on top, no water needed.
-
Approximate water needs by season:
-
Spring & Fall - 1-2X week.
-
Summer - 2-4x week, and mostly every day in hot weather
-
Winter - 1x week until soil freezes.
-
-
The smaller the container, the more quickly it will dry out
-
Overwatering can kill more quickly than underwatering.
Indoor/table-top dish gardens:
-
place in bright light from east- or west-facing windows
-
mist all foliage regularly in winter
-
water when top inch is dry, 8-12 oz. water - no fertilizer needed
DEADHEADING
-
Cutting off faded blooms maintains appearance and encourages your plants to produce more blooms - plants LOVE it!
-
Pinch, or cut off the flower stem below the spent flower and just above the first set of full healthy leaves.
-
Deadhead pansies, coleus, and geraniums regularly.
-
Some, like lantana, lobelia, bacopa, and alyssum, are self-cleaners and don't need to be deadheaded.
-
Spring bulb flowers (daffodils, tulips, hyacinths) need to be snipped off when browned, leaving foliage in place.
PEST & DISEASE CONTROL
-
Captain Jack's Insecticidal Super Soap and/or Captain Jack's Neem Oil - organic, highly effective, and good to have on hand during the summer and Fall months
